Dow AgroSciences continues to increase the company’s soybean presence. The company’s recent announcement of a licensing, research and development agreement with Schillinger Seed for the commercialization of transgenic commodity seeds broadens its soybean portfolio and product offering potential.
“This will expand the Dow AgroSciences soybean genetics offerings from group 00 to group 7 soybeans,” says Ben Kaehler, traits and germplasm licensing leader for Dow AgroSciences. “It will also add additional elite genetics for our platform to launch the Dow Herbicide Tolerance (DHT) trait, as well as future soybean traits.”
John Schillinger, president and CEO for Schillinger Seed, Inc., says the agreement will provide additional avenues for the company’s soybean genetics. “We will maintain our focus on our company’s eMerge Genetics program that targets the development of specialty soybean products for the food and feed industry,” Schillinger says.
Under the agreement, Dow AgroSciences obtains the Schillinger Seed brand and exclusive right to breed, produce, distribute and sell Schillinger Seed brand transgenic commodity soybeans. In addition, Schillinger will continue to develop and produce proprietary soybean germplasm for Dow AgroSciences to use in breeding and commercial sales.
Non-GMO and specialty soybeans will continue to be researched, developed and marketed independently by Schillinger under the eMerge Genetics brand.

Non-GMO Perspectives
I had a 120 acre field of Schillinger 388 beans that I was extremely pleased with. It was just a real tough spring for us with our soybean planting. Everything was late and fields were wet and I had weed control problems in some areas and had to do some late spraying in spots. Even in the areas where the beans were run over they were running 55 bushels on my monitor and in the clean area the monitor was hitting 75 bushels. Overall, they were the best yielding beans I had on my farm outyielding any RR beans I had this year. I will definitely plant most of my farm next year with Schillinger non-GMO and I am looking forward to the contract opportunities in my area for non-GMO.
